On October 4, a paper published on ACS Nano (2018 Impact Factor: 13.903) by Professor WANG Xiuli of Shanghai Dermatology Hospital affiliated to Tongji University and Professor ZHANG Bingbo of School of Medicine shows that intelligent H2O2 responsive ABTS-loaded HRP@Gd nanoprobe (iHRANPs), an intelligent nanoprobe, can identify different types of tumors by their H2O2 index and accurately guide subsequent treatment schemes, thus realizing intelligent diagnosis and treatment integrating imaging-guided precision PTT ablation.
To address the growing need of the precise diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma, two of the most representative malignant skin tumors, Prof. Wang and her team took an innovative approach of medicine and engineering that led to a noninvasive photomedicine strategy. By leveraging the different levels of H2O2 in the tumor microenvironment (TME), the team experimented with iHRANPs in the hope of identifying a more responsive probe to laser radiation than traditional approaches.
The team conducted a comparative study of mice with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma and mice with melanoma. Prof. Zhang’s team show that after iHRANPs was injected into the tail vein, the photoacoustic signal of melanoma tumor tissue was stronger, while that of squamous cell carcinoma was weaker. By contrast, diagnosis with MR imaging showed little difference. Subsequent photoacoustic and photothermal approaches verified the efficacy of the intelligent probe in the noninvasive diagnosis of these two kinds of skin tumors. This finding also shed light on the precise treatment of cancers.
