Prof. Shen, Zu-Yan was born in June, 1935, in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. He graduated from Tongji University in 1966 for his postgraduate study. Now he is a senior professor and supervisor of Ph. D. students of College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University. In 2005, He was elected as a member of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Prof. Shen has been doing researching, practicing and teaching works in Steel Structures for more than 50 years, with more than 300 papers and about 20 books published. He has been in charge of or has taken part in compiling 13 codes/specifications related to steel structural design. More than 40 national or local scientific research projects and over 20 practical key projects of structural analysis and experimental researches on large-scale and important building structures had been completed under the leading of Prof. Shen and 25 national or provincial /ministerial prizes for progress of science and technology had been awarded to him. Up to now, 6 postdoctoral research fellows, 42 Ph. D. students and 68 master students had finished their research work under the supervision of Prof. Shen, and many of them have already become the backbones or technical leaders in their positions. With these fruitful achievements in his academic activities, engineering practices and postgraduate student education, Prof. Shen has made very important contribution to the development of steel structural engineering and engineering practices in China.


For tall steel building structures, the constitutive relationship of steel materials which can take the effects of damages, damage cumulation and cracks into account, hysteresis models for different typical elements and beam-column joints, and geometrical and material bi-nonlinear stiffness matrix of beam and column elements had been established by Prof. Shen’s research work. Based on these achievements, an unified static and dynamic nonlinear analysis method for tall steel building structures was presented, by which theoretical analysis on limit load-carrying capacity, overall instability, elasto-plastic aseismic behavior of tall steel building structures can be conducted approaching to true situation of structures. Furthermore, damage degree of structures and their elements subjected to earthquake action, occurrence of cracks and their propagation, and successive aseismic behavior and development of the damage and cracks of damaged structures can be estimated by the presented innovative method. Shanghai Municipal Standard, “Temporary specification for structural design of tall steel buildings”, chief-edited by Prof. She, Zu-Yan, is the first standard in China for tall steel building structural design, and gives important contribution to the development of steel structural engineering in China


For spatial steel structures, the elasto-plastic stability analysis considering different imperfections and updating of large deformation was derived to analyze the post-buckling behaviors of structures with different instability phenomena and the judgment criteria and tracing techniques for dynamic instability under earthquake action has been established by Prof. Shen. These results have contributed greatly to the engineering practices of different types of large-span spatial steel structural systems, such as the long cantilever steel roof of Shanghai Stadium, the large steel roof Shanghai Grand Theater, the steel structure of Shanghai Pudong International Airport Terminal, the steel reticulated shell for dry coal shelter of Jiaxing Electricy-generating Factory, the large steel roof structure of Shenzhen People’s Square, and the steel reticulated shell of National Grand Theater, etc..


Prof. Shen, Zu-Yan was the Chairmen of the first, second and third National Steering Committee of the Civil Engineering Program of Higher Education professional Guidance, and Chairman of the first and second National Professional Accreditation Board of Civil Engineering Program. During this period, mutual recognition of each other’s degree programs in Civil Engineering between China and UK had been completed, which is very important for worldwide popularization of Civil Engineering of China universities.
