New miRNA to regulate colorectal cancer discovered by research group led by Huang Qi and Ge Bujun

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the world. At present, surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and targeted therapy are the major treatments, among which targeted therapy has been developing rapidly, especially in recent years. MiRNA plays a key role in regulating the cell growth, differentiation, apoptosis and tumorigenesis. Therefore, detection of miRNA is expected to providepatients with more detailed and individual treatment, and miRNA targeted therapy has become one of the focuses of current study.

Based on the colorectal cancer specimens in clinical surgeries, the research group led by Huang Qi and Ge Bujun, from general surgery,Affiliated Tongji Hospital, finally found a new tumor-associated miRNA, miR-4260, in the study of the role of miRNAs in the development of colorectal cancer. It has been proved that the reduction of miR-4260 expression could prevent the proliferation and migration of colorectal cancer,inducing its apoptosis. Its target genes, SMAD4 and MCC, has also been clarified in further studies. In the mice model of colorectal cancer, tumor growth can be prevented significantly by inhibiting miR-4260, thus proved its effectiveness.
