China-US Young Maker Competition 2018, Shanghai came to a successful conclusion on July 1st. There were two venues for the preliminary, one in Tongji University and the other in Shanghai Jiaotong University. From June 29th- 30th, 12 teams were selected at each venue for Shanghai Final at WECAN Start-up Accelerator. After the rivalry, four projects from Tongji University stood out and ranked top five among a total of 24 competing teams: a piano learning robot partner called Chirp, a project on music teaching aid design called Magic Cube, a gesture-interactive intelligent garment for rehabilitation training, and a role-playing robot. The winning teams, on behalf of Shanghai, will participate in the national final due in mid-August in Beijing.
Chirp is a learning partner robot able to accompany growing children, and to offer intelligent education and entertaining games at the same time. Magic Cube, targeting children from three to six years old, aims to promote an immersion music class where children can feel the wonder of music through their own practical experience. The gesture-interactive intelligent garment, coupled with wearable sensory and smart fabrics, is able to monitor users in real time and offer rehabilitation instructions as a physical therapist does. Finally, the role-playing robot, targeting children from seven to twelve years old, is a teaching aid seeking to guide children through the whole play-making process in an intriguing way.
