The classic Flamenco Carmen, performed by Sevilla Dance Troupe from Spain, was staged at the University Auditorium on the Siping Campus, Tongji University, on the evening of Apr. 27th. This was one of the activities on the theme of: Introduction of Fine Arts to Universities. An audience of 2500 people, including Tongji teachers and students, watched the spectacular opera.

Carmen is a worldwide, long-running opera originating in Romanticism in the 19th century. The latest show on stage in Tongji is one adapted version recreated by Sevilla Dance Troupe from Spain, which have naturally incorporated baile (the unique dance in Flamenco) into the opera, giving the harmonious, exquisite, and enthusiastic combination of the two art-forms. Sevilla Dance Troupe is a noted professional dance company from Spain with rich performing experience in a number of famous theaters all over the world. The show that evening was extraordinarily successful because its plot plucked at the audience`s heartstrings. When the well-known music piece, Habanera, started, people off stage sang along spontaneously. And, when the dancers made their smooth but powerful moves along the Toreador Song, the audience`s passion was ignited instantly.

Activities of Introduction of Fine Arts to Universities seek to display the cultural heritage of various nations in manifold forms. At the same time, the activities help to improve Tongji teachers and students’ aesthetic and artistic appreciation while setting an elegant, graceful university cultural fashion.
